CSS is the digital copy protection for DVD. Any product that carries a DVD Video/Rom/R logo has circuitry that will prevent a CSS encrypted DVD from being copied to a hard drive for example.

In its most simplest from this encryption prevents the casual copier from taking their rented DVD and copying it to their computer for viewing later. The CSS copy protection flags to the computer that this is an illegal process and prevents the copy from happening.

Its no secret that in 2001 the CSS system was hacked by "DVD Jon" the young hacker from Norway. The implications of this are that by using certain computer programs available on the internet, a reasonably computer literate person can remove the CSS encryption while copying the DVD video data to their hard drive.
From there the content can be viewed or recorded on to DVD-R discs for playback in DVD Players.

CSS encryption should be viewed by a content/copyright owner as simply as "speed bumps" in terms of preventing illegalcopying of their content.

There are other types of copy protection available (ArccoS and Rip Guard), that when used in conjunction with CSS and Macrovision dramatically increases content security.

24-7DVD does not charge for CSS encryption, the master must be formatted with CSS encryption on the DLT tapes.
