How does silkscreen printing work?

Silk screen printing is the oldest type of printing for CD and DVD discs, up to six colours can be printed on to a disc. It is most suitable for solid block colours (not photos). It is still the most common printing process for CD singles & albums.

The unique advantage of silkscreen printing is the PMS (Pantone Matching System) colours.

These inks are developed so that no matter what print process is used the colours will always stay the same.

Most corporate logos use a pantone colour for example 24-7s logo is PMS7426c. It is most important for graphic data supplied for silkscreen printing to be created from vector graphics (a line art based infinite resolution graphics file).

This is commonly a .eps, .pdf or .ai file.
Other advantages are matt and gloss treatments and high detail textured finishes.
It is possible to print photographic images using the CYMK method, this is called picture print, but 24-7DVD recommend offset litho printing for all photographic images.

The most ideal input master is a minimum vector based press ready .pdf file, the file is electronically ripped and films produced, these films are exposed onto screens which are placed in the print machine.

Each screen prints one colour by using a blade to squeeze the paint onto the disc through the mask on to the disc.

The disc is then passed under a UV drier before the next colour is applied. 24-7 have made several million discs using this process.
